Making journeys safer, more efficient, and more fun
How do we make better use of our roads? 5G car connectivity enables vehicles to connect to each other, to the infrastructure, to network services, and to other road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. That means roads can be safer, faster, and more energy efficient. In-vehicle infotainment will make journeys more pleasant too.
Nokia is a founding member of the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA). The 5GAA aims to bring automotive and telecommunications companies together to harmonize and accelerate the introduction of intelligent transport and communication solutions.
Enable compelling in-car experiences
Thanks to 5G, we can make best use of our time on the road. Using 5G car infotainment services, passengers can catch up on TV box sets or prepare for their meeting, as easily as if they were at home.
Service providers will play an important role in the infotainment ecosystem, alongside car manufacturers and content providers. Together, they can enable more fulfilling in-vehicle experiences:
- Deliver high definition video to the car, for entertainment and education on the move.
- Stream cloud-based games, supporting live interactions with other players in real time.
- Enable web browsing and wi-fi in the vehicle, to bring the full power of the internet to the passenger seat.
Rethink mobility for the 21st century
The environmental impact of road traffic, the heart-breaking human cost of road accidents, and the daily drudge of traffic jams are prompting companies to rethink mobility. By enabling 5G connected vehicles to communicate with each other and with roadside infrastructure, it’s possible to make traffic safer, less congested, and more energy efficient.
Service providers work with automotive companies and other ecosystem partners to enable new connected vehicle-to-everything (5G C-V2X) applications, including:
- Real-time situational awareness and high definition maps
- Cooperative maneuver of autonomous vehicles for emergency situations

- High definition sensor sharing
- Tele-operated driving

Shift gears with WING
Car manufacturers want a reliable, secure, and constant connection to their cars and customers, wherever they are. Nokia’s Worldwide IoT Network Grid (WING) is a managed service that gives mobile network operators global connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) services. Using WING, service providers can give automotive companies the 5G connection they need.
Service providers using WING can support car makers and their customers by enabling:
- Monitoring and maintenance of increasingly intelligent vehicles, wherever they are.
- Content services that deliver new revenue streams consistently, worldwide.
- Globally consistent service level agreements across all jurisdictions.
5G connected smart tunnel in Spain for assisted driving
As announced by Telefónica: the operator, in partnership with Nokia, Ineco, Stellantis, the CTAG (Automotive Technology Centre of Galicia) and SICE, has sensorised and given 5G coverage to the Cereixal tunnel on the A-6 (Lugo) of the road network of the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, thus moving towards a smart road that communicates with connected vehicles and assists driving.
The smart tunnel, the first in Spain to be connected to vehicles, uses the specific capabilities for C-V2X (cellular vehicle-to-everything) vehicular communications and IoT (Internet of Things) sensorisation and edge computing of the 5G network to send information to drivers on the weather conditions at the exit, road works, warnings of slow vehicles, potential congestion, accidents, obstacles on the road, the presence of pedestrians, oncoming vehicles and sudden braking during their journeys through it, as well as warnings of the entry of emergency vehicles.
The initiative is being developed within the framework of the 5G Galicia Pilot promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation through Red.es for the development of this technology in Spain by means of a public call for applications for aid co-financed by the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) in partnership with the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.
