Nokia Optical Networking Fundamentals

Course number: ER00835
Course duration: 4 days
Price: €3,200

Course overview

This course is designed for engineers, IT professionals, and network planning personnel who need to understand the fundamental principles and practices of optical networking. It provides a practical introduction to the technologies, architectures, and tools used in modern optical transport networks, with a specific focus on the Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) platform. Participants will explore the key functionalities of the 1830 PSS family, including support for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) switching and Optical Core Switch capabilities.

The course introduces participants to critical Nokia optical networking tools such as the 1830 WS-P (formerly EPT), used for network design and engineering, the Network Services Platform (NSP) for orchestration and automation, and WS-NOC (formerly NFM-T) for network operations and management. Through a combination of theoretical sessions and hands-on practice, participants will gain a clear understanding of optical network components, interworking principles, node functionality, and the main transport technologies. Foundational concepts related to protection, control, and management are also covered to ensure a well-rounded understanding.

To reinforce learning, the course includes lab exercises and multiple case studies that guide participants through practical use cases in simple 1830 PSS-based network scenarios. Using WS-P and WS-NOC, participants will design, configure, and manage basic optical networks, developing essential skills that can be applied in real-world environments.

Course objectives

After completing the course, students should be able to:

  • Describe optical signal propagation in optical networks
  • Identify the typical building blocks of a WDM network
  • Describe the functionalities of the WDM building blocks
  • Identify the main engineering parameters that characterize the network equipment
  • Compute the power budget for an optical link
  • Describe the concept of trail and service
  • Identify the typical architectures for a WDM node
  • Classify the network levels and topologies
  • Get connected to 1830 PSS SWDM nodes using CLI, WebUI, and NFM-T
  • Recognize the main alarms, conditions, logs, and performance metrics
  • Perform channel power monitoring using Wavelength Tracker functionalities

  • Verify the main elements of a previously designed network through EPT
  • Design a simple network using 1830 EPT
  • Describe the NFM-T infrastructure and list its components
