Nokia in Finland

Nokia, with its headquarters located in Espoo, Finland, operates in approx. 130 countries. In addition to Espoo, there are two other sites in Finland: Oulu and Tampere. Finland is a key location for research, development and manufacturing. We are a community of 6500 people representing 80 nationalities. Established near the town of Tampere in 1865, Nokia has strong roots in Finland.

All three sites, located close to major technical universities, play a significant role in advanced technology development and in creating products and solutions for mobile networks as well as management systems. Finland also hosts Nokia Technologies which focuses on our licensing business, covering patent, brand and technology. In addition, Finland is a key location for Nokia Bell Labs with unrivalled track record of innovation - 9 Nobel prizes. Nokia Finland is the clear leader in Nokia's patent applications globally: 28% of all Nokia's patent applications (first filings) in 2021 were originated from Finland.

Each site in Finland has its own focus area: Espoo focuses on the development of mobile networks and cloud products; Oulu specializes in the radio technologies; and Tampere is the home of network management and leading SoC development.

Our global HQ is located in Espoo, where all Corporate Functions and majority of the Business Groups are represented. Espoo focuses on the development of mobile networks and cloud service products, and especially on research into advanced radio and mobile network technologies. Espoo campus is also known for its technical expertise from Research to Field Verification phases. Cooperation with Aalto University, the University of Helsinki, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and the Research Institution VTT is active. The ICT unit of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is located on our campus.

Oulu is one of Nokia's key locations with over 40 years' experience. The site is a unique Radio research, development and manufacturing center in the world. Oulu area is one of the leading radio research hot spots globally. It uses the radio ecosystem in trialling the latest technologies and solutions with the customers. Current focus for Oulu site is 5G including 5G standardization (in 3GPP) and System-on-Chip, new 5G radio products HW and SW as well as verification and manufacturability. The site cooperates actively with the University of Oulu.

In Tampere, Nokia specializes in Network and Cloud operability with orchestration and services, System-on-Chip (SoC) design, and video & codec development. Tampere Site is also known for Bell Labs license contribution, participation in Mission to Moon project, and Internet of Things in cooperation with Nokia Technologies. Nokia Tampere co-operates closely with the University of Tampere.

“I have always felt empowered and encouraged to develop myself and use my full potential in my working environment. It has always motivated me to learn more. But still the best part is our own strong culture which makes me feel as important part of Nokia family.”

Laura V. / Development Engineer

“After university I wanted to work with chip development and with world-leading technology. At Nokia, I get to do both. I am part of a team doing specification and development work for highly efficient System on Chips (SoCs), that will be used in the next generation of 5G base stations, on the latest process technologies. I'm connected with many experts both here in Espoo and all around the world, so there's always something new to learn every day.”

Oscar S. / SoC Architecture Technical Specialist

“It is a pleasure to help build the technology that connects and revolutionizes the world. I work with hardware architecture design for future 5G products in the System on Chip (SoC) unit of Mobile Networks.”

Talita C. / SoC Engineer

Finland hosts one of Nokia’s three laboratories with a full network environment available 24/7 to the global R&D teams for testing. The company also has its own frequencies (GSM, WCDMA, LTE and 5G) for research and development purposes.

Nokia is an active player in the local ICT ecosystem. It has a strong cluster of Finnish partners such as universities, research institutions, operators and other organizations involved in telecommunications research, with which it enjoys a strong R&D collaboration.

The factory in Oulu is a central part of Nokia’s global manufacturing network. In Oulu, we also have new product introduction in our specialized radio factory.

As the market leader in Finland, Nokia provides infrastructure and services to major local operators and other service providers and is an integral partner in the development of their mobile broadband business.
