Nokia and OPPO join forces on the OPPO reno 10x zoom

As one of China’s leading smartphone manufacturers, OPPO is at the forefront of providing new user experiences for its consumers. OPPO’s latest flagship series of phones, Reno, come equipped with incredible video capture capabilities that give users access to a whole new world of content possibilities. But it’s not only the visual side of content OPPO is elevating with Reno.

Its latest device, the Reno 10x Zoom, comes integrated with OZO Audio capabilities that unlock new levels of sonic immersion. In partnership with Nokia to deliver the highest quality audio to smartphones, the Reno 10x Zoom is just the first of OPPO’s devices to carry OZO Audio.

The vision for OPPO Reno was clear - that only the best audio technology would be considered for the Reno 10x Zoom. With our extensive legacy in device audio, as well as the standout capabilities of the OZO Audio range, we were able to provide audio expertise that best aligned with the Reno 10x Zoom’s three microphones configuration, as well as the unique zoom capability of its camera.

The evolving needs of how smartphone users capture and share their experiences was a key driver in determining which OZO Audio features to implement. With its 48-megapixel camera that captures video with exceptional clarity, coupled with standout zoom capabilities, the Reno 10x Zoom opens the door for imaginative new use cases that enable users to delve deeper into their environment.

Two OZO Audio features stood out as clear complements to Reno’s innovative video capabilities:

  • Audio 3D, which captures and delivers a natural sound experience and high-fidelity audio within one degree of accuracy; and

  • Audio Zoom, which allows users to dynamically pinpoint and amplify sound to correspond to zoomed video - like a telephoto lens for audio.

Integrating transformative audio technology

To optimize the OZO Audio implementation, form factor and microphone placement were carefully considered. As with any slim form factor, the Reno 10x Zoom came with unique design challenges. Relying on deep collaboration between the Nokia and OPPO R&D teams, we were able to optimize integration of Audio 3D and Audio Zoom for the specific placement of the device’s three microphones.

Using early prototypes, we took on-site acoustic laboratory measurements in order to fine-tune the audio algorithms that analyze and process the multiple microphone signals. In doing so, we were able to create the desired spatial audio output. Iterative technology evaluation and refinement according to OPPO’s audio technology needs and product requirements guided the development, enabling optimal utilization of OZO Audio capabilities in the Reno phone.

But how do these capabilities work?

Audio 3D unlocks the ability to faithfully capture the audio landscape with vibrant depth, direction and detail, such that the audio can be experienced within one degree of accuracy. Just as human hearing registers sounds from all directions, so too do OPPO Reno phones.

With Audio Zoom, immersion is taken to new depths. Video zoom capabilities are a given in any smart device with a camera, but audio-visual zoom is a relatively new innovation. Just like a telephoto lens allows for visual zoom, Audio Zoom brings the same capability to sound capture. When combined with the Reno 10x Zoom’s extensive zoom capability, this use case reaches new depths, with users able to dynamically pinpoint and amplify sound like never before, extending the range of experiences that can be captured.

One case in point - Imagine capturing video of a subject at a distance, on a busy street full of problematic background noise. With Audio Zoom, a user can close in on the hero audio and, when combined with Audio 3D, create a sonic landscape that faithfully reproduces the experience. While simple enough to envision, OZO Audio overcomes a myriad of challenges to enable immersive - and enhanced - audio experiences.
