Quality counts when you’re managing millions of network elements

Quality is the sum of many factors and covers many key areas, from quality management to information security and environmental management. NSN’s Global Delivery Centers (GDCs), located in Portugal and India, work hard to make sure all quality criteria are in place. These GDCs, along with our GDC hubs, support around 550 operators globally, providing remote management of close to 1 million network elements and around 200 million subscribers. To handle the volume of data and subscriber information generated by the GDCs requires not only the right capabilities but also the right systems and processes.
Take the example of information security. For operators, protecting the information related to network operations and subscribers is critically important. For this reason, our GDC in Portugal has just earned ISO 27001:2005 certification for "Information Security Management”, joining our GDC in India which was certified earlier this year. As data traffic and the amount of network and personal information continue to grow, NSN is committed to complying with the highest levels of accreditation and certification to ensure security.
Organizations that implement ISO27001, which is the global information security management system (ISMS) standard, are audited and certified for managing their information system with controls across 11 domains such as Information security policy, governance of information security, physical and environment security, etc.
Celebrating a zero score
To achieve a ‘zero non-conformity’ rating in the final audit, which the GDC Portugal earned, every team member must internalize the spirit of information security and embed it in their daily activities at work. Greater awareness, discipline and accountability help ensure that network and related information is in safe hands.
What about quality and environmental management? How are the GDCs involved in measuring and verifying NSN’s performance? Bureau Veritas, the certification body that issues all the management system certification that NSN holds, is currently carrying out an extensive certification audit program to renew NSN’s company-wide ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 14001 environmental management certifications.
The GDC Hub in Russia was selected as one of the locations for these re-certification audits and has already successfully completed the audit. Their processes and working practices lived up to the stringent requirements of both standards.
QuEST for quality
Going even further, NSN recognizes the importance of a dedicated quality standard for our industry, which faces special challenges and requirements related to the delivery of communications services. With this in mind, the company has been extremely active in supporting QuEST (Quality Excellence for Suppliers of Telecommunications) Forum and its ongoing work on TL 9000, a telecom industry specific quality management system that is built on ISO 9001. NSN already holds TL 9000 certification for some of its key organizations, locations and products and is expanding the scope of this certification on a step-by-step basis.
Quality counts in our industry more than ever. Our GDCs will continue focusing on the quality of all their processes and practices to ensure the highest possible performance for the operators who trust their operations to us.
