Let’s have a look at single minded AirScale Base Station to find out what it can do for operators as part of the AirScale Blog Series.

Think of a typical base station site. Now think of a packed metro train during the rush hour. Well maybe it's not quite that bad, but  many base station sites do tend to be pretty crowded places. They often have very little space available for more equipment to be added – in most cases for LTE upgrades.

The need to run legacy GSM and WCDMA base stations and the new high capacity LTE base station in the same site makes base stations operations complicated, while carbon emissions and costs rise. Looking ahead, operators may face real difficulties finding the space for the extra infrastructure and antennas that will be needed as we move into the Internet of Things and 5G age with its new radio technologies and extended spectrum use.

The answer to this growing complexity is the AirScale Base Station with Single RAN software. Ultimately, we are looking at extremely simple sites with one installation having shared baseband, shared radio shared transport, shared spectrum and shared operations and management system. And with flexibility to change the needed radio technologies locally or remotely with a click of the button in matter of seconds. This is not an new concept, the same is available for the current Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station and we’ve seen the communications industry adopt the principle rapidly. The Nokia AirScale Base Station is going a step further.

AirScale Base Station hardware is radio agnostic, its design supports any network topology and the capacity can be scaled up in line with demand, new and existing spectrum can be used more effectively with new multiband radios, and the energy costs and carbon emissions are reduced dramatically.

Not only is there less hardware on site to power up, but new capabilities such as our Zero Emission offering, can reduce the use phase carbon dioxide emissions by 60 percent and therefore help towards a broader use of renewable energy sources. By today, Nokia has delivered renewable energy sources for over 100 customers and we can expect the increasing trend to greener networks to strengthen.

What does this all mean in practice? By simplifying site complexity, operators can make more effective use of their existing sites, avoid the costs of finding and running new sites. Operations become simpler giving total control over the network and delivering total flexibility to run technologies as dictated by changing subscriber demand. In fact, the total cost of ownership can be up to 30 percent lower.
