Automotive licensing program

Driving innovation in connected cars

Millions of cars are sold each year with embedded cellular connectivity. Through our automotive licensing program, we make our connectivity patents available for use in connected vehicles. Potential applications include mapping, software updates and in-vehicle infotainment.

Nokia has a strong portfolio of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) for cellular connectivity, spanning 2G, 3G, 4G and upcoming 5G mobile communications, as well as the IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard.

We enable connected cars

We have been developing communications technologies for over 30 years. We’re excited to see how mobile technologies can be used in connected vehicles, now and in the near future, thanks to our automotive licensing program.

We invest in R&D

Our patent-protected technologies are fundamental to cellular standards, and we continue to invest heavily in research and development (R&D). In 2019, we invested 19 percent of our revenues in R&D.
