Automotive licensing program
Driving innovation in connected cars
Millions of connected vehicles are sold each year. Wireless connectivity in cars enables a wide variety of applications, such as real-time mapping, in-vehicle infotainment, software updates, and enhanced safety.
As a founding member of the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), Nokia is working to accelerate the launch of new transportation solutions based on 5G.
We enable connected vehicles
Nokia has an industry leading portfolio of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) for cellular connectivity, spanning 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G mobile communications, as well as the IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard. We continue to invest heavily in research and development (R&D). Nokia has invested over €140 billion in R&D since 2000, including over €4.5 billion in 2022 alone.
Our patented inventions are available for use in connected vehicles through our bilateral automotive licensing program, and via the Avanci licensing pool, and the vast majority of connected cars in the market now have a license to our technology.
The future of road transport is connected
We have been driving the development of communications technologies for over 30 years. We’re excited to see how mobile technologies can be used in connected vehicles now and in the future.
Research shows consumers value cellular connectivity and are willing to pay more for vehicles that include connectivity features, such as in-vehicle infotainment, real-time mapping and real-time situational awareness. Going forward, new advanced technologies enabling telematics and automated driving will continue to transform road transport.
License our patented connectivity technologies for your vehicles
We work with automotive manufacturers to enable the use of our cutting-edge connectivity technologies in their vehicles. We also run parallel licensing programs for mobile devices, consumer electronics and video services and the Internet of Things.
Our licensing team can help you find the right license for your needs.
We support the licensing of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. Our SEPs are licensed in accordance with our licensing principles.
