Coherent Routing

Build application-optimized IP-optical networks using coherent optics

The Nokia Coherent Routing solution lets you combine the power of digital coherent optics (DCOs) with Nokia IP routers, optical line systems and cross-domain network automation to enable more efficient and scalable IP-optical network designs.

What is coherent routing?

Relentless demand for more capacity at a lower cost per bit is driving service providers and cloud builders to look for new and more efficient ways to scale their IP and optical network infrastructure.

Recent advances in silicon technology and standardization have fueled the development of a new breed of profile-optimized DCOs that can be integrated in small pluggable form factors such as QSFP56-DD. ZR and ZR+ pluggable DCOs give you the option to connect IP routers directly and efficiently over tunable DWDM wavelengths, with port densities similar to those you can achieve with short-reach client optics.

Coherent routing: Interconnecting routers over DWDM wavelengths

Nokia coherent routing solution

Performance-optimized modular transponders complement profile-optimized pluggable DCOs for links that require higher capacity and longer reach. This combination enables you to efficiently scale metropolitan and regional network applications with optimal use of IP routing equipment, fiber capacity and coherent optics.

Evolution to IP over DWDM transport

Our Coherent Routing solution provides all the building blocks you need to build scalable and cost-optimized IP over DWDM network infrastructures, including:

  • IP routers that are design-optimized to support high-power ZR and ZR+ pluggable DCOs at full density without compromises
  • Compact optical line systems with reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) to efficiently multiplex and route DWDM wavelengths over optical fiber networks
  • Cross-domain IP-optical management and control software for seamless, end-to-end operation through a single pane of glass.

Carrier-grade routers for any speed

Nokia 7750 SR, 7730 SXR and 7250 IXR routing platforms and line cards accommodate a full range of best-in-class 400ZR and 400ZR+ optics. 7750 SR routers powered by FP5 silicon are hardware ready for 800G pluggable DCOs as they become available.

Superior power dissipation and cooling of QSFP-DD port cages provides ample headroom to equip even the most powerful 400ZR+ optics. This allows you to optimize link capacity and reach over multi-span and ROADM-enabled fiber routes and use the added flexibility of wavelength selective switching (WSS) to support multi-point applications using fiber ring and mesh topologies.

Optical line systems for any application

As you consider the evolution to IP over DWDM, you might focus on the IP layer. However, optical line systems provide essential building blocks you can use to deploy, operate and maintain coherent routing applications at scale.

Nokia 1830 PSS and PSI open optical line systems and optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs) enable you to efficiently deploy a full suite of IP over DWDM applications across any distance and topology.

  • Fixed OADMs with in-line amplifiers let you maximize fiber capacity and reach of coherent wavelengths.
  • CDC-F ROADMs allow you to dynamically provision wavelengths between source and destination routers across any fiber topology to transport aggregated IP traffic reliably and efficiently with the fewest number of routing hops and optical–electrical interface transitions.

In addition, modular and integrated transponders based on Nokia PSE-V and PSE-6s super-coherent digital signal processor (DSP) technology are ideal for Nx100GE, 400GE and 800GE applications with extended reach requirements.

IP-optical coordination and automation

IP routing and optical transport require specialized domain expertise. Most network operators manage each domain with dedicated teams and tools. It makes sense to continue this mode of operation for IP over DWDM networking.

The ZR+ pluggable DCOs equipped in routers are considered alien wavelengths to the existing DWDM infrastructure. This makes certain holistic management functions (e.g., power management, assurance and fault diagnosis) difficult to carry out.

Our Coherent Routing solution removes the constraints and complexities of dealing with alien wavelengths, even in multivendor, multi-domain deployments. It uses the ONF Transport API (TAPI) architecture to enable end-to-end wavelength visibility and control so your optical transport team can easily configure and pull stats from plugs installed in the routers.

The Nokia Network Services Platform (NSP) puts your IP and optical teams on the same wavelength with cross-domain IP-optical management. This enables them to efficiently coordinate and automate IP-optical network operations from end to end, through a single pane of glass. The NSP offers a growing catalog of pre-validated applications and use cases to help get your teams up to speed quickly with minimal cost and risk.
