Security for UNIX(R) Based Systems
07 December 1988
The computing and telecommunications industries are more closely knit than ever before. Documented computer intrusions have occured, causing a serious compromise of computer-based communications systems throughout the world. Many computer systems that are used in the telecommunications industry, including operations support systems and switching systems, are based on the UNIX(R) system. Using publicly available information, such as netnews of bulletin board systems, potential intruders can significantly increase their chances for succeeding. Some simple guidelines can be followed on UNIX(R) systems to enhance their security. Methods of reducing the risk of the vulnerabilities in these systems will be discussed.
