Connected transportation: Making the case for vehicle fleet management

Companies that manage vehicle fleets are following the development of connected car technology with a lot of interest these days. Real-time monitoring along with emerging apps and services have the potential to help control vehicle-related costs, optimize fleet performance and keep drivers, passengers and cargo safer and more secure.

To fully realize the promise of connected vehicle technology, fleet operators not only need solutions that, for example, will allow them to manage fuel consumption in real time or use big data analytics for preventative maintenance, but they also need the ability to bring these kinds of solutions together in an easy-to-manage way. A platform, essentially.

This platform will require four key characteristics to meet fleet operators’ business needs in the near term and over time:

1. Scalability

Fleet sizes can range from just a few vehicles to tens of thousands. Any connected fleet management platform will have to accommodate this variety and be able to scale as fleets grow so that managers have full control over all “devices” (technologies, apps and services deployed throughout the fleet) at all times.

Fleet operators recognize the value of connected car technology but want reassurance that as vehicles become part of the Internet of Things (IoT) they will be safe from hacks, malware, viruses and other threats. Proper endpoint security and real-time analysis of data traffic to detect possible intrusion attempts are a must.

3. Device-agnosticism

A big part of what makes the connected car vision so appealing is the variety of uses it supports. Making this possible requires a multi-tenant platform capable of accommodating the full range of potential devices and applications from multiple vendors and providers.

4. Actionable data

Any data generated by connected vehicles and shared via the management platform ultimately has to bring business value to operators, helping them meet their reliability, cost and safety objectives. That means supporting services like optimized routing, driver compliance monitoring, geo-localization and GPS solutions that can access vehicle sensor data.
