Industrial internet everywhere thanks to private networks

It’s been an exciting few weeks for digital automation at Nokia!

We’ve launched a new industrial internet solution for our enterprise customers, introduced our digital automation building blocks (3D positioning and real-time video analytics), and announced a partnership with OSIsoft, a company dedicated to helping people transform their world through data.

Digitalization experts Juha Pankakoski, Konecranes and Mika Klemettinen, Business Finland join this Nokia panel discussion on the latest in our digital automation developments.

Feet on the ground in Germany, eyes in the sky in Finland

We then brought our digital automation strategy to life at Hannover Messe – the world’s biggest industrial fair – where more 210,000 people came to visit some 5,900 exhibitors. From being in Hannover and engaging with various companies and parties there, it’s clear there is a strong need to bring business-critical connectivity to the factory floor and other industrial facilities. There also appears to be consensus that LTE radio is the technology of choice to do so, followed by 5G in the future.

In a world first, we allowed visitors to our booth to fly multiple drones simultaneously more than 1,500 kilometers away on the Finnish coastline1. Apart from spectacular live HD video streams, the demo showed the incredible opportunities that low-latency private networks offer to industrial players looking to take the next step in digital automation. Guests were particularly impressed by the real-time capabilities, the ease of deployment of business-critical connectivity, and the maturity of the solutions. They saw multiple opportunities and use cases to apply to their own businesses.

In short, our message to visitors at the Nokia booth was: “it’s full speed ahead on your digitalization journey with technology from Nokia that’s ready to boost your competitiveness and open new opportunities.”

A partnership for data-driven insights 

Our partnership with OSIsoft is about connecting data streams from sensors and other devices with OSIsoft’s PI System. This turns our data into rich, real-time insights for reducing energy, improving productivity or developing new products.

In OSIsoft’s annual user group event, PI World, Nokia was recognized for a pilot with Sempra Renewables, who worked with Nokia, SenseOps, and others to pilot a new solution for remote monitoring of wind turbines to predict pitch assembly failure. Wind turbine pitch assemblies have high failure rates, and can be one of the largest contributors to equipment downtime. The new solution is on track to realize a 90% cost saving for Sempra Renewables.

That, more than anything else I’ve seen or heard over the past weeks, demonstrates the power that connected technology can have in improving people’s lives and making the world a better place for us all.
