What does mobile backhaul and traveling in Italy have in common?
As the dark and cold descend on us here in Finland, I can’t help but think back to my last summer vacation on the beautiful Italian island of Favignana. But not for the reason you think…
It got me pondering about how people and goods flow over transport networks at certain speeds and frequencies: demand peaks and troughs alternate. The holiday season is one of those times when traffic increases and delays and congestion are commonplace. Nowadays, intermodal transport is a key requisite in any transport infrastructure planning. Have you ever seen a ship arriving at a port with 100 containers which are to be loaded onto a train with only capacity for 50 containers?
I experienced something comparable last summer when we arrived by car at the harbor parking lot on the mainland and then transferred to a bus, which then took us via shiny hydrofoil across the Mediterranean to our final destination. Unfortunately, upon arrival, we disembarked alongside 250 other eager passengers to discover that there was only one bus waiting to transport all of us to the other side of the island!
If you think about it, data and their networks are not too different from tourists and intermodal transport networks: In both cases, waiting is not the preferred option. To ensure efficiency and security, it’s crucial that the transport experience is built on the users’ needs and that the intermodal transportation is seamless – door-to-door, node-to-node, throughout the transport network.
In mobile networks, like in the tourism industry, aspects such as capacity (have you ever been told at the airport that your flight was overbooked?) and latency (punctuality matters!) need to be planned end-to-end, from radio access to IP transport, from home to the hotel. As radio technologies evolve, mobile backhaul must keep up, developing the required speed and capacity and offering increased scalability, efficiency and versatility.

So keep that image in mind as you plan to renew your radio access as it’s essential to upgrade the rest of the intermodal transport network as well.
