Transitioning to Telco cloud can be easy and secure - here’s how

“I’m  still not clear on what telco cloud means to me or how I can transition to cloud - what can you do to help me?”

This was the response from the CTO of a leading mobile operator in Europe when I asked him about their telco cloud requirements during one of the recent industry forums. With all the messages around cloud coming from different directions in market it isn’t surprising that some operators are still trying to understand the implications of cloud for their operations and business. Others are contemplatinga cloud tailored for their own and their customer’s needs. Cloud is a complex technological shift that many are hesitant to jump in with both feet, but the benefits are too big for operators to ignore Particularly as it can put them in the same  speed territory of internet services providers, allowing them to roll out services quickly and ramp them down equally fast if they fail. The low impact of failure can encourage a bold approach to innovation. In fact, this is the silver lining to the perceived complex cloud.

With telco cloud also comes the openness and associated multitude of players in the market. For operators it means that they are no longer limited to the offerings of a few big vendors but have more selection in the market in terms of the services and applications that they can provide their customers. The move to virtualization and openness of the cloud highlights  another important aspect - security. Though cloud brings in the benefits of lower cost and improved agility, the security vulnerabilities are growing with virtualization and the move to distributed and cloud based architecture. The ablity to quickly create and ramp down applications from the data centers create additional layers of security vulnerabilities. Concerns around potential security risks are often highlighted as a key reason to dissuade operators from transitioning to telco cloud. During a recent Nokia Networks webinar on telco cloud security, participants were asked about their priorities for security action and investments. Half of the audience cited securing the VNFs as their top priority.
