Unleashing value by enabling Industry 4.0

The fourth industrial revolution - or Industry 4.0 – will open up exciting new opportunities for product developers and manufacturers in several vertical segments. This revolution will make the existing processes more efficient, more reliable, and above all, safer. It will improve time-to-market and help create additional new digital services and business models with significant added value for companies, and economies as a whole. The industry segments it will touch include, for example, discrete manufacturing, process industries, transport and logistics.
Looking back in history, the first industrial revolution was brought to life with water and steam powered mechanization. It was then followed by the introduction of mass production with electric power, which is considered the second revolution. The third revolution started with computers and automation of the industrial processes. Industry 4.0 is the next major disruption, which will again transform the way the industry operates and generates business.

Industry 4.0 foresees a much tighter interaction of domains across the full product lifecycle from design and manufacturing to distribution, services and disposal. The physical equipment and products will interact with the human workforce and with end users, as well as with the digital data and machine intelligence (cyber-physical systems). The new revolution is about improving the efficiency of the value chain and creating value-added services through automation, information and knowledge sharing. We can achieve the highest level of knowledge sharing by connecting all the devices, machinery, sensors and people through a real-time, programmable communication platform.
Many innovative activities are already happening today in domains such as Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Augmented and Virtual Reality, Collaborative and Swarm Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Smart Manufacturing, Smart Services, Smart Products and Smart Workers. All of these activities require a multi-disciplinary convergence of information technology and communications, networking and operations technology with automation, while taking full advantage of cloud infrastructure and virtualization technologies.
Event: Join Nokia at the Hannover Messe for our panel discussion, 5G and Edge Cloud in Industry 4.0 – Opportunities and Challenges, to explore different viewpoints on the use and introduction of these new information and communication technology enablers for the future of digital manufacturing.Venue location: Bitkom Gemeinschaftsstand, Innovation Area Industrie 4.0, Digital Factory Hall 7 – D28Time: Thursday, 28 April 2016 16:00 -16:45 CET
