Metro-edge solutions

Bringing scale and efficiency to the metro edge

Optimized end-to-end optical networking solutions for metro and edge applications

New services and applications, along with increased fiberization to the home and office, are driving significant increases in optical network capacity to the metro edge.  Widespread deployment of 5G services and increased deployment of xPON systems drive increases in broadband access speeds and resulting backhaul capacity, while Enterprise networks and business services continue to see increases in bandwidth and interface speeds.

Complementing that, new applications like edge computing and analytics, and AI/machine learning will drive further increases in bandwidth required to the metro edge and for data center interconnection (DCI).

Network operators that provide connectivity to the metro edge require optical networking solutions that are optimized to the specific and diverse needs of metro and edge applications, while also ensuring seamless end-to-end networking across their networks.  Key requirements include the following:

Benefits and features

Optical Transport

with scale and performance optimized for metro applications

Multi-Service

to serve a wide range of interface speeds and service types, including Ethernet, Carrier Ethernet, Fibre Channel, OTN and wavelengths

Optimized Platforms

in compact form factors able to operate in telco or customer premises, and indoor or outdoor installations

End-to-end networking

with efficient integration into end-to-end  networks enabling common operations, services, security, automation, and hardware/software

Optical networking solutions optimized for the metro edge

Optical network operators including CSPs, Webscale and enterprises require scalable & efficient metro network solutions that are optimized across a wide range of service and deployment requirements.  Nokia has your needs covered with a range of solutions and attributes, including:

Pluggable coherent optics

Complete portfolio of pluggable coherent optics including 100Gb/s, 400Gb/s and 800Gb/s transceivers available in industry-standard formats including QSFP28, QSFP-DD, QSFP-DD800 and CFP2 for use in 800ZR/ZR+ and OpenROADM applications.

pluggable montage

Network operators can optimize their metro network transport requirements with the performance of coherent optics to the metro edge, with the power savings and flexibility of pluggable optics.

Nokia’s pluggable coherent optics can be deployed across a wide range of platforms for optical transport, IP routing, and PON applications to optimize optical transport in access, metro and regional networks.

Edge-optimized service management

Compact and integrated cards in the 1830 PSS family enable greater scale for delivery of Layer 0/1/2 services to the metro edge. These include:

Integrated packet transport

Integrated Packet Transport switching cards powered by Nokia’s SR OS software to support 1GE to 100GE service aggregation and transport, and MEF-compliant Carrier Ethernet services

Multi-service muxponder

Multi-service muxponders enable aggregation and transport of a wide range of TDM services, including 10G to 100G Ethernet, 10G to 100G OTN and fiber channel into 400G WDM uplinks

Edge-optimized ROADM

Edge-optimized ROADM supporting integrated 4-degree ROADM + ILA functionality, and deployable in both indoor & outdoor metro aggregation and ring applications

Compact metro-optimized platforms

The new 1830 PSS-4II compact optical transport platform optimized for metro edge applications forms part of the 1830 PSS family which is widely deployed with over 1,100 network operators worldwide.

PSS4

The 1830 PSS-4II brings added scale to metro edge applications, with enhanced cooling to support future scale.

Supporting both DC and AC power options, and extended temperature range (ETR) environments, the PSS-4II can be used in telco and enterprise deployments, across indoor and outdoor environments.

An enhanced network controller enables PSS-4II to run advanced network operating system features, and extends the feature-rich WaveSuite service and operations automation to the network edge.

PSS-4II also supports the synchronization features of the 1830 PSS family, enabling sync distribution and sync-as-a-service to the network edge.

The 1830 PSS-4II supports the broad range of cards available across the 1830 PSS family, enabling common end-to-end operations, services and security that network operators rely on elsewhere in their network.

Your metro network requirements may span end-to-end connectivity from core and backbone networks to the metro edge, private or campus networks, or metro data center interconnection.  In all cases, Nokia’s metro-optimized optical networking solutions provide the right tools for your needs, while ensuring your scale, efficiency and sustainability objectives are met.
