Automatic 3D reconstruction using a simple model-based prediction technique.

The TRACER project addresses the problem of automatically reconstructing the 3D structure of neurons (brain cells) from sets of serial section electron micrographics. This paper describes a mechanism where a simple model of the cell is used to predict the position and shape of the next contour in the series. The prediction is used to constrain search of the contour, and in many cases improves the performance of TRACER. However, this technique does not appear to be extendable to the more difficult problem of reconstructing rapidly changing or branching cells.
