What is the sensitivity of a direct-detection lightwave receiver employing an optical preamp? Published calculations for on- off keyed signals differ by a factor of four. The analysis presented here, based on simple models and straightforward arguments, predicts a sensitivity (for ideal components) of 38 photons per bit.
