Excitations of Hydromagnetic Alfven Waves by Energetic Ring Current Protons

Stability properties of hydromagnetic Alfven Waves with large- m (East-Wave) wave numbers are investigated via an eigenmode analysis. The instability mechanisms considered here are the local magnet- drift resonances. Correspondingly, the eigenmode equation becomes a differential equation along the magnetic field line and can be analyzed both variationally and numerically.
