Considers the effect of introducing repeatered submarine cable systems on the growth of international telecommunications. Briefly surveys communication facilities prior to laying of the first trans-atlantic cable and gives a summary of principal parameters of early submarine cable systems. The present submarine cable network is discussed in some detail including major system characteristics and routes. Examples of telecommunication traffic growth following the provision of high grade communication cables are illustrated and future traffic requirements are briefly discussed together with outline of the new wide-band submerged repeater systems under development to meet the demand. Present traffic routing chart for submarine telephone cables gives a complete global picture of their circuit capacities. Finally, a brief comparison between cable and satellite systems is presented.
