The universe, born in a "big bang" more than 10 billion year ago, continues to expand today. Will expansion go on forever, or will the universe begin eventually to contract? The existence in space of so-called "dark matter" -- matter not visible as stars or galaxies -- may hold the clue. A Bell labs astrophysicist describes his search for dark matter and the implications of his findings.
