Feasibility of Hybrid Raman/EDFA Amplificaiton in Bidirectional Optical Transmission

Feasibility of hybrid optical amplification in interleaved bidirectional architecture is studied. Optical repeater node is constructed using L-Band erbium doped fiber amplifier and bidirectional Raman pumping to achieve combined gain of 34dB. Signal impairments associated with this architecture are identified and measured. Dense WDM transmission of 40+40 25GHz spaced channels is demonstrated using hydrid bidirectional amplifier over non-zero dispersion shifted fiber spans.
