A novel technique for controlling the bandwidth of a fiber Brillouin amplifier is proposed and demonstrated. By using a frequency modulated pump laser, in this case an external cavity semiconductor laser, we have increased the bandwidth of useful gain by more than one order of magnitude. The scheme can be used to tailor the gain characteristics of fiber Brillouin amplifiers to specific system needs in optical communication systems.
