An adaptive optical receiver was successfully tested over a 750 km long transparent WDM link. The excellent agreement of estimated and measured bit error ratio demonstrates nonintrusive monitoring in a transparent optical network. We report on the results of a field trial over a 75 km long WDM link between Darmstadt and Berlin, with an adaptive 10 Gb/s optical receiver, that combines non-intrusive error rate monitoring, automatic receiver parameter optimization and adaptive mitigation of transmission impairments.
