FLN and Energy Transfer in the Mixed Oxide System alpha-Al sub (2x) Ga sub 2 (1-x) O sub 3:Cr sup (3+)
The technique of laser-induced fluorescence line narrowing is used to probe the inhomogeneously broadened sup 2 E-sup 4 A sub 2 transition of Cr sup (3+) in the disordered crystalline material alpha-Al sub 2x Ga sub 2(1-x) O sub 3 where x=0.2. The observed emission from Cr sup (3+) ions in specific local environments is consistent with that from Cr sup (3+) in the ordered materials alpha-Al sub 2 O sub 3 and alpha-Ga sub 2 O sub 3. Measurements of the homogeneous linewidth at various temperatures indicate that the broadening mechanism associated with the tunneling modes of amorphous structures is not present in this material.
