FM/FSK Characterization of Tunable Two-Electrode DFB Lasers and Their Performance in a Noncoherent Detection Communication System

We have measured the FM and FSK responses of tunable two-electrode DFB lasers up to ~1 GHz. Using these lasers in a noncoherent detection system in which an optical filter converts an FSK signal into ASK, we demonstrate 10 sup (-9) BER up to 800 Mb/s. We relate the FM and FSK responses of these lasers to their performance in a system.
