Formation of elliptical galaxies and massive halos.
01 January 1986
We report N body models for the formation of spheroids of galaxies. The material starts in uniform expansion. In the dissipationless scheme, turnaround and collapse with the formation and destruction substructure yields a smooth object similar to an elliptical galaxy; but compared to the r(1/4) function, the core density is low and the outer density gradient is too steep. We add dissipation with a simple scheme of sticky particle collisions between neighboring "gas clouds", turning them into collisionless "stars" after a specific number of collisions.
