New types of public phones are able to accept information such as a calling card number for transmission to a central office. If a card is encoded with a called directory number as well as a credit number, then users of the card are provided with free calling service by charging the account of the calling card number that is recorded on this card. Such a card can be combined with an advertisement to encourage people to call, for example, a towering service and can be given to children to encourage them to call their parents without revealing the parents' account number. The card can be combined with the information normally provided on a business card so that the recipient of the modified business card can readily call the person who gave out the business card and may prefer to call that person in preference to a competitor.
