It is now well recognized that advanced materials play a critical role in the development of a nation's economy. Consequently, government agencies such as the National Science Foundation are funding materials research through several new programs such as Engineering Research Centers, Materials Research Groups, Initiatives in Materials Processing and in Materials Chemistry.
