Erbium doped fiber amplifiers are being developed for use in both undersea and terrestrial fiber optic systems. Two key parameters for system design are gain and noise figure. The measurement of gain in an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) while simple in concept, is complicated by the presence of Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE). That is, the output of the EDFA at the signal wavelength, consists of the signal and an additional amount of ASE.
