Fundamental aspects of plasma-surface interactions and the etching process.

Various features of the interactions between the plasma and surfaces in etching discharges are reviewed. Optical diagnosis used to gather information about plasma surface processes are described and illustrated with data from recent research. The basic effects which contribute to surface morphology and the dependence of profile anisotropy on frequency and pressure are also discussed.
