The modern era of microwave radio transmission in North America began in 1947 with AT&T's application to the FCC to authorize the construction of a microwave radio route from Chicago to New York. The terrestrial microwave radio network, specifically at 4 and 6 GHZ, has become ubiquitous in North America (see Fig. 1) and is now the "primary workhorse" of telecommunications.
