Gaussian Beams are Fundamentally Different from Free-Space Modes.

Either from physical considerations or from exact calculations it is found that a Gaussian beam is grossly different from any free space mode. In fact each mode of free space is a standing wave and it is the superposition of two or more of them that approaches the configuration of a through flowing Gaussian beam.
