The FCC mandates locating wireless phones during 911 calls, leading to the development of various geolocation technologies. This paper reviews these techniques, emphasizing geolocation's future role in value-added services. It specifically details Assisted GPS for its accuracy and cost-effectiveness, and introduces SAMPS (System Assisted Mobile Positioning through Satellite), an assisted GPS-based standard for TDMA networks that enables positioning services and enhances GPS receiver performance in handsets.
