Geomagnetic Disturbances and Long-Haul Telecommunications Cables
09 November 1989
Plasma physics processes occurring on the sun, in the interplanetary medium, and in the earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere can produce effects which are detrimental to technological systems deployed on the earth or in near-earth space. Geomagnetic disturbances can affect both cable and 'wireless' (including satellite) communications. The influences of geomagnetic disturbances on long, man-made, Earth-based conductors such as telegraph lines have been observed for well over a hundred years.
