Geometrical Frustration

When interactions between magnetic degrees of freedom are incompatible with the underlying crystal lattice, exotic phenomena such as spin ice or spin liquid phases can result. These can exhibit unusual low-energy degrees of freedom, an emergent gauge structure, and many different types of instabilities.
