Nonplanar conjugated systems which contain formally sp(2) hybridized carbon atoms have assumed an ever increasing presence in organic chemistry. It has been customary to assess the pi-orbital misalignment in such systems by reporting the formal dihedral angles (tau) made by a pair of sigma-bonds across the double bonds. We have recently introduced the pi-orbital axis vector (POAV) analysis in order to provide a more accurate picture of the bonding in such systems, and it is now quite clear that the dislocations in pi-bonding in nonplanar conjugated organic systems are much smaller than hitherto realized - as a result of pi-orbital rehybridization.
