A telephone switching system that employs electronic components and reed switches to the exclusion of electromechanical devices can be described as quasi-electronic. The practicability and advantages of such a system, which uses reed relays both as cross-point elements and as switches at suitable electronic control points, has been demonstrated by the trial switching systems supplied to the German Post Office. Using hermetically sealed reed contacts bearing the trademark "Herkon", these HE-60 L systems have shown an improved reliability factor compared with crossbar exchanges whilst occupying less space. The quasi-electronic technique has now been adopted for the Herkomat private automatic branch exchange to bring all these advantages to the PABX system.
