The storage capacity of wide-spread optical media such as CD-ROMs and DVDs is limited by the wavelength of lighr and by the fact that these are surface-based technologies. The data transfer speed is limited by the serial nature of the writing and readout processes. There is an ever-growing demand for higher capacity and higher data transfer rate removable inexpensive storage media.
