High Power Optical Amplifiers for Free-Space Communication Systems

Emerging free-space optical communications applications require high power optical amplifiers (HPOAs) designed to differing requirements: wavelength band, modulation, polarization, and environment. Issues and performance are summarized, with emphasis on the 1.5 micron wavelength band.
