How far could we stretch the capacity of optical satellite communications ?

While digital coherent free-space optics is foreseen as the enabling technology for next generation high throughput satellite, molecular absorption and turbulence through the atmosphere restrain the possibility to fully use the optical amplifier bandwidth.
