How Fiber Nonlinearities Have Shaped Optical Communications

Obviously the evolution of lightwave communication systems has been driven by the ever increasing demand for bandwidth. It is probably less well appreciated that the details of this evolution have been determined by a rather esoteric natural phenomenon occurring in optical fibers, namely optical nonlinearities. The role of optical nonlinearities in shaping generations of lightwave systems will be discussed.
