IEEE 802.11 and HIPERLAN/2 are two wireless LANs standards existing and under completion. These two have the same PHY (physical) layer for 5 GHz but different MACs (medium access control). Different MACs have different effects on latency and throughput in addition to higher layer protocols. The performance of IEEE 802.11 and HIPERLAN/2 in terms of net throughput for application under TCP/IP has been evaluated.
