Several years have elapsed since the introduction of PACS and user experience with these systems has indicated the ongoing need for increased network performance, especially as image resolutions increase.

During this time, significant advances have been made in communications technology. Advances in fiber optics have increased circuits have made it possible for systems to take advantage of this additional link bandwidth. Initial implementations of ISDN have become a reality.

As the incorporation of ISDN into the central office continues, ISDN will provide efficient world- wide digital connectivity and enhanced data services for voice, data, images, and ultimately video over the existing conventional telephone network.
