The intense research activity in wireless sensor network (WSN) design over the past several years has led quite naturally to the investigation of heterogeneous WSNs. These heterogeneous networks consist of sensor nodes with varying levels of computational and sensing ability as well as mobility. One of the most compelling heterogeneous WSN scenarios has been the interaction of ground based sensors with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
