The introduction of fiber cables and fiber-based digital loop carrier systems into the distribution plant sets the stage for the demise of the last road-block to unlimited bandwidth services to the customer. The architecture of these systems has been extended from a fiber feeder only system to one which includes both fiber distribution cable and fiber drop in the distribution plant. AT&T's entry into the fiber distribution plant, the SLC (R) Series 5 Fiber-To-The-Home system, went into service on August 5, 1988.
