The introduction of an active demarcation point and the development of an active demarcation point unit make it possible to supervise and operate optical access networks of different architecture efficiently and economically. In addition to the conceptual proposals the results of first prototypes of an active demarcation point unit in a GPON transmission system are presented. The use of the active unit for the flexible service enterprise is shown likewise.
