Introduction of cognitive systems in the wireless world — Research achievements and future challenges for end-to-end efficiency
01 January 2010
Telecommunications and information technology rapidly migrate towards the Future Internet (FI) era, which is characterized by powerful and complex network infrastructures, advanced applications, services and content, efficient power management as well as extensions in the business model. These features render the management of the FI world increasingly complex, compared to today. The introduction of cognitive systems is believed to be an efficient response to complexity. In this respect, the contribution of this paper is twofold: on one hand, it presents some fundamental outcomes of detailed studies on cognitive systems, in the form of research achievements, which showcase the benefits of the exploitation of cognitive management systems in wireless infrastructures; on the other hand, it outlines some key challenges that will form part of wireless systems in the FI era, associated with the expansion of work on cognitive systems, which can be valid solution for the realization of the FI vision.
