In 1986, the first ISDN features were introduced in the United States. Since then, significant progress has been made in the growth of the number of customers actively using ISDN basic and primary rate interface lines. Continued successful deployment of ISDN, however, is heavily dependent on the identification and development of applications that directly relate to end customer needs. Several efforts are underway in the telecommunications industry to identify these applications and demonstrate their benefits. Two of these are the TriVista studies sponsored by AT&T and the North American ISDN Users' Forum sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
