Network operations and management is an area of communications whose time has come. This special JSAC issue surveys and defines this unusual, new field in the Communications Society's many areas of special interest. Articles in the issue have been chosen to define and discuss three key areas in network operations and management: Operations planning, Operations technology, and Network management.
