In this paper we determine the degrees of freedom of a cellular system with an arbitrary number of base stations with multiple antennas in fading environment. Furthermore, we propose algorithms which can be used to achieve these optimal degrees of freedom under certain conditions. The algorithms are based on alternating the optimization of the transmit and receive subspaces at each transmitter and receiver. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithms outperform other transmit schemes which are commonly used in cellular systems.
